Range Rover Sport – Robert Redford In The Back of My Range Rover…

It’s August 1, it’s the first day of the holiday in Cornwall and it’s absolutely lashing down! Camping in the middle of a rain-soaked field was never meant to be like this. It’s water off a duck’s back to the Range Rover, of course. I’m already looking at the possibilities of sleeping in the car tonight.

The Autobiography has just about every piece of luxury kit available but the rear-screen DVD system is going to come into it’s own later. We’re planning a back seat screening of the Robert Redford sailing movie, All Is Lost – which seems appropriate, considering the circumstances.

Dog in the boot, £5,000 of top flight speakers and heated seats to enjoy. It costs £25 to take two people to the movies these days – I reckon that after three years, the Range Rover DVD system might have paid for itself.

Right, I’m off for a spot of sea-kayaking, followed by a light crab summer. It’s Cornwall, it always rains…

Range Rover Sport – The School Run Favourite For Posh Mums…

Sandwiched between the full-size Range Rover and the ‘squashed’ Evoque is the favourite school run SUV for posh mums – the Sport.

And having only driven 12 miles to Kemble railway station and back, I can tell you already that this latest Sport is one of the most complete cars I have ever driven, as well as being definite yummy mummy material.

Not only is it supremely comfortable, beautifully built and easy on the eye, it drives like a GTI and still returns exceptional MPG. Perfect.

You are paying premium money for the Range Rover Sport but as an all-rounder, it simple blows away anything offered by Mercedes or BMW. Just what you need for dropping the little ones off at St Trinians…

More tomorrow after I’ve driven down to Cornwall…

Wednesday – News Flash

Another Mazda6 driver flashed his lights at me today. Is there some Masonic bond going on with 6 drivers that I don’t know about it? Took me totally by surprise I can tell you!

I get fellow Land Rover drivers waving to me when I’m out in the Series III – that’s people in ‘proper’ Land Rover Defenders, not mums on the school run in a Discovery or Range Rover Sport.

I’d like to think that there was a special bond between Mazda6 drivers, if only because the saloon lacks any real character of its own. I’m going to Google Mazda 6 Owners’ Club in a moment and see what I’m missing.

It’s hard not to like the 6, it does everything it should. If only it had a little bit extra to send the pulse racing, apart from fuel economy and uber reliability…

Friday – A Sound Machine

Jeremy  The Adam is aimed at a youth market – so in a bid to feel 21 again, I’ve been listening at Absolute 80s Radio on the baby Vauxhall’s thumping stereo. It sounds great – even Dire Straits!

It’s amazing how in-car entertainment systems have become so good. DAB helps of course but using Bluetooth to ‘suck’ music from my phone to the unit is another simple and safe benefit. No fiddling with CDs, USB cables or AUX-in wires.

For a little car, the Adam boxes above its weight in the infotainment department. A touchscreen display makes it even easier to use, although there was no sat nav in our test car.

I’ve just returned from a couple of days sea-kayaking in Scotland and at Bristol Airport, I had a real struggle finding the Adam. In fact, I thought it had been stolen when I couldn’t see it in the car park. The car is so small, it was completely hidden being a Range Rover Sport and Ford Focus.

The boot area is just big enough for two large rucksacks and not much else. Dropping the split-fold back seats helps but for a long weekend away, this is really a car that is only big enough for two adults and all their kit. At least it’s big on style.
